My Lady Marchioness,
The following- Melodies, Strathspeys, Reels &c, which I have
the honor humbly to submit to the notice of your Ladyship and the Public, were
not originally intended for publication; they were composed in moments of* lei.:
sure by way of amusement and relaxation from my usual avocations .
Having- little claim to Professional knowledge, T can hardly flatter myself
that they will he deemed worthy of a Patronage so distinguished as that of
your Ladyship, whose correct judgement in Music, can only be excelled hy
your refined and exquisite taste: But, as many of these tunes have already
been honored by your Ladyship’s approbation, which I am proud to acknowledge,
and being- ambitious to comply with your Ladyship's repeated wishes, as well as
that of His Grace the Duke of Gordon, I have taken the liberty of submit _
ting them to the Public under your Ladyship’s auspices, trusting you will ac-
cept them as the only testimony of respect I have in my power to offer to

Ance mair, Heaven be praised! round my ain heartsome ingle,
Wi’ the friends o’ my youth, I cordially mingle;
Nae force now upon me, to seem wae or glad;
I may laugh when I’m merry, and sigh when Im sad.
My ain fireside, my ain fireside,
O sweet is the blink o’ my ain fireside.
Nae falsehood to dread, nae malice to fear,
But truth to delight me, and kindness to cheer;
O’ a’ roads to pleasure that ever were tried,
There’s nane half sae sure as anes ain fireside.
My ain fireside, my ain fireside,
O sweet is the blink o’ my ain fireside.

That ye sae soon wad lightlie me.
I pu’d the rose sae sweet an’ fine
The fairest flower on a’ the lea;
Tho’ fresh an’ fair, it wither’d syne.
E’en like the love ye promis’d me,
Ye said ye lo’ed but me alane,
Nor cou’d ye keep your fancy free,
An’ gin that I wad be your ain.
The chains o’ love wad lightsome be.
O, gin ye had sincerely lov’d!
They lightsome aye had been to me;
But sin’ that ye hae faithless prov’d,
I’ll strive to keep my heart a wee

Last week a Lord wi’ coach sae braw,
Thought he w ad win me frae them a’,
But soon he saw his hopes were vain,
For he cou’d ne’er a smile obtain.
The French in Egypt also fan’.
They cou’dna strive wi’ a Highlandman,

Our vows exchang’d, I rove at ease,
I ken he’s mine when_e’er I please;
